My Top Ten

There have been some real great video games. Good games aren't just a few moments of entertainment. Great games can be more entertaining than movies. Rich environments, interesting characters, great story, challenging action and puzzles are found in games that the players love even as their graphics and engines age.

10. Dark Forces

This first person shooter was one of the first to actually incorporate a story and cut scenes. Dark Forces was also the first Star Wars game that made you feel like you were actually in the world of Star Wars. What better setting than- A long time ago in a galaxy far far away...

9. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

A great adventure game! Not only is the protagonist a world class gymnast, he has the Dagger of Time which can actually allow the player to move time backwards if they steer our hero into a sticky situation.

8. Far Cry

Talk about a large scale first person shooter. The maps are huge, and their are only a few loading points. Our hero is placed on an island full of angry mercenaries and grotesque mutants. His mission save the world and rescue the girl from certain death. Ok fine the plot is cliche' but it is really fun to play, I hope they make a sequel that lives up to the first.

7. Mech Warrior 3

This is in my opinion the peak of the Mech Warrior series. At the time it had top notch graphics with great controls. It allowed you to manage your campaign quite well, along with a great mech customization interface. The later Mech Warrior games seemed to be dumbed down to allow them to function on consoles.

6. Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2

A great follow up to a great game! This game is a well balanced real time strategy. The Allied single player campaign was classically funny. This game was enjoyable in both single player and multiplayer modes.

5. Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear

Terrorists armed with suitcase nukes, and a team of the most elite soldiers the free world has to offer. This counter terror classic is in my opinion the most technical shooter ever made! And while Rainbow Six 3 had great graphics and a few new tricks it neglected some of Rogue Spears finer points. With a damage system that makes Rainbow Six 3 look crude, the body armor and bullet proof glass acts like it should in the real world. This is in contrast to Rainbow Six 3 body armor that is only good for one bullet no matter what type of weapon is used. So basically in Rouge Spear the heavy body armor can take a lot of punishment from weaker weapons wile in Rainbow Six 3 even the weakest weapon can kill you after your body armor has taken one hit. I think the best mission was the one where you had to use the Barrett to destroy the engine of the car.

4. Star Craft

I think this is the best real time strategy ever made! Three races with distinct strengths and weaknesses. This game was fun for single player and was great for LAN parties! They need to make a sequel bad! Who cares about World of Warcraft: I want Star Craft 2 NOW!

3. Metal Gear Solid

An action game where your goal is to not kill the enemy? Yep that's MGS. The MGS series are some truly great games! Sneaking around in an attempt to keep the huge nuclear equipped robot from falling into the wrong hands. Your way outnumbered so avoiding confrontation is your best bet. Even though these games feature some of the most convoluted plots they are still just plain fun to play.

2. Full Throttle

This is an adventure game circa 1994. It uses an interface that is now obsolete, but the game was extremely fun to play! The plot was rich with a protagonist who was always ready to make a hilarious comment about something. Ben, a biker is roped into a murder mystery in a semi post apocalyptic setting. Just thinking about it makes me want to play it! For me it was a real hard move putting this game in second place.

1. Half Life 2

I must aggree with PC gamer when they said "BEST GAME EVER." This game has an environment that is exceedingly vivid. The player can interact with the environment in a way that was never present previously. The plot is great, it is told in a way that forces the player to piece together events and learn about the world of HL2 right along with our hero Gordon Freeman. Never once does the view on the monitor stray from what Freeman sees. Even without the cut scenes Half Life 2 is strongly story driven. The Graphics and engine are full of the little touches that make it easy to become immersed in this superior game!

Well, I'm going to have to agree that Full Throttle was a pretty cool game. That guy had some attitude.

I still love the old Super Mario brothers.

Remember that old Texas Instrument we used to have? Crazy how much things have changed.
