Nerds killed Sci-Fi
I remember back in the day when STAR TREK: The Next Generation was quality TV. I realy enjoyed that show as a kid. STAR TREK: Deep space Nine was also good, it brought a wider view of the STAR TREK universe. Now Sci-Fi has been relegated to late night and the hardly watched Sci-Fi cable channel. Threashold, Surface, and Alias have moderate Sci-Fi plot elements, but they dont realy fall into the pure Sci-Fi genre.
Nerds have killed shows like STAR TREK for the rest of us. STAR TREK: Voyager/Enterprise realy shrunk the fan base. Previously STAR TREK had a more broad appeal even. Eventualy the show just became for hard core fans only. Enterprise only ran for four seasons, when it was cancelled. Stargate:SG1 tried to take the blockbuster movie and make a series out of it, It turned out to be lame, lame, lame! I loved the STARGATE movie, it was great. The fact that a series was made to appeal to a limited faction of fans realy killed the franchise. The original writers and producers seem realy disapointed with the series. Their comentary on the DVD seems to state that they were angery with what had been done to their idea. A sequil would have been a better choice to continue the story.
While branching out and expanding a show with spinnoffs is some times cool, appealing to the nerds will doom a show to low ratings.

You know, I was actually the same! I really enjoyed watching STAR TREK with my dad, both The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. The movies weren't too bad either as far as I can remember in my juvenile memory. But I do remember when it went off the deep end... and not into space, mind you. Alas, not all good things can last forever. And amen about the Stargate SG1 crap! For the longest time, I just thought it was a retarded TV show that somehow survived! Turns out there was a somewhat decent movie behind it all!

Does smallville count as sci-fi? Man even it went downhill. Remember when we were younger and how we would always get Stargate at the video store? and how we had the missionaries over one time and one of them saw that we had rented it and was like "ya that movie was good the first one or two times" and it was like the umpteenth time for us renting it. tee hee. good times good times.
